How Does Mindfulness Help with Recovery?
Addiction is a poor attempt at self care. Addictive behaviors help shut out emotions, anxiety, depression, and any other unwanted painful parts of our experience. Unfortunately we cannot selectively numb. When we shut out the parts of ourselves that we don’t like, we numb out from life in general. Which can create a lot of harm. By numbing out large parts of our experience we become dependent on external substances and behaviors as a way to cope with life.
Mindfulness is a way to approach experience directly. We learn to gain some ground and find a way to approach some of these unwanted parts of ourselves with care and compassion. Over time we develop a wholesome relationship with the fullness our lives and end the reactive tendencies of addiction. With mindfulness we start to see life more clearly. With that clear seeing we can gain free will. Without clear seeing we are not able to have the choice of free will. Without clear seeing we are guided by our own impulses to chase pleasure and turn away from pain. When we stop fighting pain and clinging to pleasure there is a freedom. This is a freedom from the addictive patterns. This is freedom from addiction.
We are open to those who are living with addictions of all kinds.
What is Mindful Recovery?
Mindful Recovery is an eight week mindfulness based exploration of recovery from addictions of all kinds. Mindfulness meditation has been used as a practice to free individuals from the reactivity that leads to mental agitation and stress for thousands of years. Addiction is a repetitive, reactive attempt to manage underlying and often unknown emotional wounds. We are utilizing mindfulness as the core practice to meet our inner thoughts, feelings, and emotions with a nonjudgemental, investigative awareness. We are creating space through disciplined cultivation of present moment awareness so we will have the choice to not react in our addictive patterns. We are using mindfulness to recover our own natural human tendencies towards kindness, compassion, and community. Through this 8-week course you will be given the tools and training to meet the challenges of everyday life with presence and resilience.
